About
Finn van Cappelle

Hey there, I'm Finn!
I'm an illustrator, writer, and I suppose I'm also a bit of a political theorist. I am interested in exploring the relationships between citizens, their care systems, and their government. In this, I refer to and make use of a lot of literature from the field of (critical) disability studies. Two things are most important to me in my working process: 1) listening, and 2) imagining.
It is my joy to listen to others and ask thorough questions on what they think of their lives, their care systems, their government, you name it. This helps me identify what emotions are attached to the social issue that I'm trying to understand. Of course it is important to know what the root causes of an issue are, but I want to give the emotions attached to the issue a prominent place in my work as well. I would argue I make my best work when I stay in close touch with the people it concerns.

Secondly, I find it important to imagine a future. What future? Whatever future you want! Dream big! Dreaming big is exactly what gives imagination its empowering quality. What world do we want for ourselves and what would this look like? Well, what better way to explore this than through the arts!

I am inspired by texts such as Federico Campagna's work on world-ing, Karen Soldatic's 'Disability and Neoliberal State Formations', Victor Finkelstein's personal accounts about disability and South African Apartheid, Joan Tronto's 'caring demoracy', and Mia Mingus' blog 'leaving evidence'.

I am currently completing a dual degree programme. This consists of a bachelor in Illustration at WDKA, and a Liberal Arts and Science bachelor at EUC, where I major in Political Philosophy & Critical Theory.
